- Chronic Kidney Disease Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) and Drug Dosing - Latest Evidence
GFR is the best way to measure kidney function – using serum creatinine alone is unreliable and insensitive. Most path labs use the MDRD formula to report an eGFR. This helps to identify CKD early and may also signal when drug dosage adjustments are necessary. For most drugs which are prescribed in primary care, and for most patients (average body size), where an MDRD eGFR is available and no other measure of eGFR is known or accessible, it is clinically appropriate to use eGFR to assist drug-dosing decision making.
