The Adolescent Forensic Health Service, Royal Children’s Hospital has recently endorsed a new model of primary health care for young people at the Parkville Youth Justice Precinct. During transition between models of care and whilst new medical positions are recruited to, we are seeking a General Practitioner to provide 1-2 medical sessions per week on a temporary basis (approx 3 months).

The GP role works within a multi-displinary team and ensures appropriate and effective medical care is provided to young people within a custodial environment and continuity of care on transition between custody and the community. The role involves providing direct service to clients seeking or requiring medical attention, for example:

  • Medical assessment and diagnosis for clients with complex medical issues;
  • Treatment of acute care needs;
  • Preventative health interventions
  • Prescription of medications for clients;
  • Appropriate client referrals for diagnostic and specialist medical services in the community;
  • Development and monitoring of medical health care plans for clients;
  • Reviewing of test results and relevant correspondence pertaining to the client care and the necessary action taken for continuity of care;

The role will suit an individual with the following skills and experience;

  • Working with vulnerable young people who may engage in high risk behaviours such as substance use, self-harm and suicidal behaviours.
  • Experience in addiction medicine including opiate replacement therapies;
  • Management of medical emergencies;
  • Knowledge and awareness of adolescent development and gender specific issues, particularly in relation to vulnerable young people;
