Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Oral Health

Just as Captain Cook commented on the health of Aboriginal people when he landed in Australia , Joseph Banks also observed “the particular soundness of the dentition of Aboriginal people, which at that time would have been at a far more satisfactory level than that of the European settlers”. Since then, the destruction of traditional food sources, culture, and lifestyle; together with lack of access to a healthy diet, and other determinants of health, including accessible dental care, has led to Aboriginal people having worse oral health in Australia.

Within the MGPN catchment there are a number of ATSI specific oral health services.
